We received some brilliant news at the Welsh Gymnastics Awards in January 2017 – VGA was named the Welsh Gymnastics Club of the Year for 2016! In 2016 VGA launched Go Gym in Partnership with Torfaen Leisure Trust and this allowed us to expand the membership of the club – and we became the first club in Wales to reach a membership in excess of 1000. Welsh Gymnastics commended the VGA coaching team for their passion and commitment to the sport of gymnastics in Wales. This topped off a great year for VGA as we were also the runners up for the British Gymnastics Club Award for the second time. Huge congratulations also go to Kyle and Mel who were shortlisted to receive coaching awards from Welsh Gymnastics at the event. Although neither claimed the winning spot, to even be shortlisted is a fantastic achievement.

This month has also seen us launch a fantastic new Gymnastics for All discipline at VGA – Team Gym! This activity is currently attracting in excess of 40 participants to every session and the teams are currently working towards their first competition in May. Watch this space or follow us on social media for more information as the discipline progresses!

Our artistic girls squads continue to do well. Based on her competition results in 2016 Amy Oliver has now been selected for the British Home Nations Development Squad for 2017 – a fabulous achievement. In additional Madison Harford is the reserve for the British Performance Pathway Squad for 2017. We are very proud of both gymnasts. Madison, Hayley and Elsie retained their places in the Welsh Development squad, with Hayley and Madison attending weekly training sessions with the Welsh Academy.

Huge congratulations to Amy Oliver, who, along with her Level 3 team mates, took GOLD at the Voluntary Level 3 National Finals this month. Amy also finished 5th combined for her age group – a fantastic achievement! Competing at Level 4, Madison and her team took 5th place – a very commendable position – after some unlucky mistakes from two team members.

September proved to be a great month of competitive gymnastics for the club. Starting off with the Women’s Artistic Voluntary levels at the start of the month, VGA’s very own Madison Harfod was crowned Voluntary Level 4 Champion – placing her in the Welsh team for the British finals in November. In the Voluntary Level 3 competition, Amy Oliver finished 5th in a very close competition, also qualifying for the British finals. Other highlights from the weekend included: –

  •  Beth Wheeler – 3rd Overall (Out of Age Level 3)
  • Naomi Burgess – 5th Overall (Out of Age Level 3)
  • Jazmine Martin – 6th Overall (Out of Age Level 3)

MAY 2016

May proved to be another busy month for VGA. The club hosted its first grassroots club competition, which attracted over 500 gymnasts from venues across Caerphilly, Blaenau Gwent and Torfaen. For many gymnasts this was their first ever gymnastics competition, and an opportunity to showcase their skills in front of their families and friends. VGA would like to thank Torfaen Leisure Trust and the staff at Cwmbran Stadium for supporting the event!

VGA Grassroots Comp

Two members of the Women’s Artistic Squad had some very good results at the British Compulsory grades finals. Madison Harford placed 28 out of 60 gymnasts in the Compulsory Level 4 competition and was part of the Welsh team that placed second! Amy Oliver placed 5 in the Compulsory Level 3 competition and was part of the Welsh team that placed second!

At the British Disability Championships Bethany Paull placed 1st overall in the grade 7 competition, and passed with distinction! Well done to Bethany and coach Shevell!

On the weekend of 16/17th March, several teams of gymnasts were in action representing Valleys Gymnastics Academy!

At the Wales and South West Zonal Gradings and Future Hopes, Lauryn Carpenter, Grace Morgan, Sienna Halpin, Ruby Bailey and Mali Lane were competing. Both Lauryn and Grade passed their grading cleanly; Lauryn was crowned Welsh Champion and Grace took the silver medal in her age banding. Competing as Future Hopes, Ruby took third overall, closely followed by Sienna in 4th and Mali in 5th.

Meanwhile, Ellie Court and Charlie Williams were taking their artistic gymnastics Gradings at a South Central Wales event hosted by VGA. Both girls were excellent, with Ellie taking overall gold at Grade 6 and Charlie very close behind.

A very large team of gymnasts also represented the club at two grassroots competitions – the South Central Prelims and National Prelims. The event attracted over 350 children from across Wales and the VGA teams performed superbly. There were too many competitors and medal placings to mention but some highlights were Stephen Kenney, Logan Walker, Arwen Oliver, Amelia Watkins, Kylie Owen, Ethan Smith, Grace Thomas, Tia Thomas, McKenzie Evans taking top 3 overall positions. Lots of other gymnasts also achieved ribbons and medals on the apparatus and there were several team awards.

At the women’s artistic national and compulsory grades, VGA was well represented throughout the weekend. Particular highlights included Madison Harford and Naomi Burgess placing 5th in their respective categories, and Amy Oliver winning the Compulsory grade 3 competition. A huge well done to all gymnasts!
